Nottinghamshire have moved to resolve their top-order woes with the loan signing of Surrey left-hander Scott Newman. The 29-year-old has joined the Division One title challengers on an initial one-month loan and will be available for the Outlaws' crunch clash with Somerset at Taunton on July 31. Newman averages 41.80 in 93 first-class matches and Notts director of cricket Mick Newell is hoping the arrangement will benefit both parties. "It's been evident for a while now that the contributions of our openers haven't been good enough and signing Scott gives us an opportunity to try and make an improvement," Newell told the club's official website. "He'll play for our Second Eleven this week and we'll assess whether or not he comes into the team to face Somerset after that. "We've been very patient with our opening batsmen for the past year and a half but this arrangement gives us an opportunity to have a close look at an experienced player." Newman scored 124 in Surrey's LV County Championship game against Derbyshire in April and Newell admits such displays would prompt a possible extension. "If Scott's loan spell is successful then we'll look to extend it," said Newell. "Having a new arrival can freshen things up and it's up to the players in our squad to react to it and earn a place on merit."
