Hawks skipper in dreamland after Trophy triumph

Victorious Hampshire Hawks captain Dimitri Mascarenhas hailed a 'great team effort' following his side's Friends Provident Trophy triumph at Lord's. The Hawks coasted to a six-wicket victory over south coast rivals Sussex to clinch their second FP Trophy title in four years. Evergreen opening bowler Dominic Cork produced a man-of-the-match display with figures of (4-41) to restrict the Sharks to 219-9, which included an unbeaten 92 from skipper Mike Yardy. And Hampshire encountered few problems as they chased down their target with 57 balls and six wickets remaining, Chris Benham (37 not out) and Nic Pothas (35no) guiding Mascarenhas' men home. Speaking to Sky Sports 1 after the win, Mascarenhas said. "It was a huge team effort. We bowled pretty well up front. It was pretty pleasing. "Our top order has been tremendous all year. They deserve this as much as anyone."

Brilliant

Pothas, who was at the crease when Benham struck the winning runs with almost 10 overs to spare, said of Cork: "He was brilliant, the geriatric just doesn't seem to get any older. "We've worked really hard. it's been a group effort. Benham added: "I'm thrilled to bits, it's been a dream come true to win a final at Lord's." A delighted Cork paid tribute to the travelling fans by saying: "I just want to say brilliant to all the Hampshire fans out there. They have been our 12th man today and my team-mates were fantastic. "You keep going and you keep trying to put performances in. Today the team was magnificent." Reflecting on the defeat, a gracious Yardy was disappointed his side did not give a better account of themselves in front of a near capacity crowd at the home of cricket. He said: "We've had a great run in the competition but Hampshire outplayed us today. "They were worthy winners."
