Defeated Aussie skipper wants more correct decisions

Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes the re-introduction of across-the-board third-umpire referrals can only benefit cricket. The referral system was trialled during four Test series at the end of 2008 and will come into permanent effect in October this year. Ponting's views on the system come on the back of his side's 2-1 Ashes defeat to England, a series in which the umpires came under close scrutiny after numerous questionable decisions. Speaking on the referral system, Ponting said: "I think it will be definitely a good thing for the game - we knew there weren't going to be referrals in this series. "Any time you can get more correct decisions in the game, then that's what you're after.

Key moments

"When you have Test series as close and as evenly matched as this, you don't want a decision here and there being the difference in a series - although I'm not saying that was the case here. "We just need to be sure it is done in the right way, with the right amount of money to get the cameras in the right places." Ponting is set to leave Australia's tour temporarily to return Down Under, before returning for the culmination of the seven-match limited-overs NatWest Series. The Ashes defeat was Ponting's second as captain on English soil and many former players and supporters believe now is the time for the 34-year-old to hand the reigns over to vice-captain Michael Clarke. However, Australia's record Test run-scorer of all time believes it was a case of small margins and key moments counting against his team. "That happened on a couple of occasions, not being able to get the final wickets in (the first Test in) Cardiff, (the second) at Lord's and our first-innings batting here (at the Oval)," he explained. "We need to become more consistent in our performances."
