England captain up for player of the year award

Ashes-winning captain Andrew Strauss has been short-listed for the International Cricket Council's cricketer of the year award. The England opener is joined by Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir, team-mate and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson in being nominated for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy award. Strauss, Gambhir and Johnson are also in with a chance of winning the Test player of the year award along with Sri Lanka's Thilan Samaraweera. There are eight individual prizes as well as awards for Test and one-day international Teams of the year and the Spirit of Cricket. England captain Charlotte Edwards and batsman Claire Taylor are on the short list for the women's cricketer of the year while Graham Onions has been nominated in the emerging players category. The awards are presented at the sixth annual LG ICC awards in Johannesburg on October 1. Nominations:
