Batsman elated by cup century
India batsman Sachin Tendulkar has named his century in the final of the triangular one-day international series for the Compaq Cup as one of his greatest.
The 36-year-old laid the foundation for a 46-run defeat of Sri Lanka with an excellent knock of 138, despite playing in hot and humid conditions.
Tendulkar's 44th ODI century was vital to providing India an uncommon win in a multi-nation competition and the batsman bagged the man of the match and man of the series awards for his efforts.
"I would definitely put this century up there because the conditions were very tough and the heat was such that it drained us of our energy," said Tendulkar, who finished his innings with the aid of a runner due to leg cramps.
"I would not hesitate at all if I have to rate this as one of the best knocks.
"It was hard work out there in the middle and we had to fight every step of the way."
Difficult
Tendulkar also remarked on how the uncomfortable conditions affected the entire team and made for difficult play.
"One had to be mentally tough, but I was prepared for it," he said.
"It was difficult to play three matches in four days, not just for me but the whole team as well."
The batsman has represented India for the last 20 years and believes that Mahendra Singh Dhoni's current side is one of the best in which he has played.
"I have been fortunate to be part of the Indian cricket team from 1989 and there have been so many great names in the past," said Tendulkar.
"But I think in this lot we have got more guys who can win us matches with either bat or ball. This is what a team is about.
"There might be a few lapses, but on the whole this team has done really well."
The Champions Trophy gets under way later this month in South Africa, but Tendulkar is not concerned about the conditions and believes the team have dealt with worse.
"In South Africa we would be playing at a higher altitude and it will be different," he said.
"But I think we have played in tougher conditions and done well.
"We will have some time to acclimatise and prepare for the Champions Trophy so we would expect to do well."
