Opening batsman quits as skipper of Daredevils

Virender Sehwag, aggressive opener for Twenty20 Indian Premier League's Dehli Daredevils, has renounced his post as captain. The 30-year-old, who is currently recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during this year's IPL tournament hosted in South Africa, has said that the decision will allow him to focus on his batting. Sehwag averages 24.5 runs in 47 T20 internationals, with a top score of 94 not out and six half centuries, which is down on his average of 34.33 in limited-overs internationals for India and 50 in Test cricket. Daredevils franchise chairman Srinivas Bommidala supported the batsman's decision. "When he expressed a desire to step down in order to fully focus and concentrate on batting, we respected his decision and accepted his request." he said in a statement. Sehwag will be replaced as Daredevils captain by opening partner Gautam Gambhir in next month's Champions League tournament, which features leading regional T20 teams from five countries.
