Promising batsman extends Chelmsford stay

Essex have signed promising batsman Jaik Mickleburgh for a further two years on a contract that sees him through to the end of 2012. The England U19 international has scored four first-class half-centuries for the county after making his debut in 2008. However, he has not played since July after suffering a serious knee injury in the first U19 Test against Bangladesh, although Essex expect the 19-year-old to make a full recovery. "We are obviously delighted that Jaik has signed a contract extension with Essex," first-team coach Paul Grayson told the club's website. "He is a talented young batsman and one of the best prospects in the country. "A knee injury that he sustained midway through the season set him back a bit but he has a lot to offer this county." Mickleburgh, who joined Essex in 2006, added: "I am obviously delighted to be committing myself to Essex for the next three years. I feel there are promising times ahead with a good mixture of young and experienced players at the club. "Hopefully there are more trophies to be won just around the corner and I aim to play a big part in achieving that. "I am currently working hard in the gym, where I am getting back to full fitness. I will be heading off to South Africa in January with the England Performance Squad. "This is a great opportunity for me to improve upon my skills and to be at the standard required for the 2010 season."
