Bilal Shafayat, who made his first-class debut at the age of 16, has signed a new one-year deal with Nottinghamshire.
Newell backing 25-year-old to contribute more after tough 2009
Nottinghamshire have handed a new one-year deal to batsman Bilal Shafayat.
The 25-year-old is currently in his second spell at Trent Bridge having also had a stint playing for Northamptonshire.
The right-hander made his Championship debut six days before his 17th birthday, becoming Nottinghamshire's youngest player in the process.
However he endured a tough summer in 2009, managing only 485 runs in 13 four-day appearances with a highest score of 69.
Important role
Director of cricket Mick Newell still believes Shafayat has plenty to offer the Outlaws, though, including being the understudy to first-choice wicketkeeper Chris Read.
"Bilal offers competition amongst the batsmen and he's our back-up wicketkeeper so there's an important role for him to play in our squad," he said.
"He had a disappointing season in 2009 and he's keen to contribute more next year. We've had a few discussions and he's very keen to compete for a place here because it's his home-town club.
"We need to see a bit more from him and he's determined to show that his future lies at Trent Bridge."
