Batsman hits century for performance squad

Hampshire's Michael Carberry scored a century as England Performance Programme established a big lead in their practice match against Gauteng. Returning from a broken finger that curtailed his domestic campaign, Carberry made exactly 100 and received support from Leicestershire batsman James Taylor (65) and England spinner Adil Rashid (37), as they scored 483 all out in reply to Gauteng's 328. Resuming on 239 for two, Test hopeful Ian Bell suffered disappointment when he was bowled by Ugasen Govender having added just two runs to his overnight 51. Taylor patiently compiled his half-century as five of England's top six passed 50, with only Surrey wicket-keeper Steven Davies missing out, before Carberry temporarily left the field with an abdominal strain. However, he returned to complete his ton off 174 balls with 14 boundaries before Johnson Mafa knocked over his stumps. Slow-left-arm chinaman Tabraiz Shamsi soon accounted for Taylor leg before and the England tail of Liam Plunkett, Amjad Khan and Steven Finn chipped in with another 50 runs. The hosts then reduced the 155-run deficit by 50 runs for the loss of solitary second-innings wicket before the close on the third day.
