Chief team selector resigns following Australia defeat

Chief Pakistan team selector Iqbal Qasim resigned on Sunday after admitting disappointment in the side's display against Australia. The announcement was made soon after Pakistan were whitewashed 5-0 by the Aussies in the one-day series in Perth. "I am very disappointed, like millions of Pakistanis, over the manner in which the Pakistan team lost the Test series 3-0 and one-day series 5-0," said Qasim. "As I am responsible for the selection of the team, I quit my post." Pakistan triumphed in the World Twenty20 last year but have gone on to suffer a number of losses. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have announced they will replace current captain Mohammad Yousuf with a new skipper after the tour of Australia. The PCB appointed 56-year-old Qasim as chairman of a seven-man national selection committee in July last year after disbanding the national senior and junior selection committees the month before.

Defeat

Qasim admits he decided to quit his post after Pakistan fell to their fourth one-day defeat on Friday. "The selection committee, which I headed, did its best to select the best possible team for the Tests as well as for the one-day matches, but it did not live up to the expectations of the fans who are badly hurt," said Qasim. "I am also badly hurt and disappointed, so as a man of character I have taken this decision and hope that a proper post-mortem of the team's performance is done by the PCB to help Pakistan cricket move forward." PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar revealed he had only been informed of Qasim's resignation through the media. "We have not received his resignation and I too got to know of this news through the media. Once the decision is conveyed, only then we will take the matter further," said Sarwar. Pakistan's twin tours of New Zealand and Australia got off to a rocky start when original captain Younus Khan pulled out on the eve of the team's departure last November. Yousuf was consequently appointed as captain and, after drawing the three-Test series 1-1 in New Zealand, was retained for the Australia tour when Younus failed to make himself available.
