Stand-in skipper delighted with series triumph

England captain Alastair Cook paid tribute to his side's batting qualities after wrapping up a 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh in Mirpur. The left-handed opener, standing in as captain in the absence of Andrew Strauss, sealed a memorable tour with a century as England won the second Test by nine wickets on day five. The win followed up the 181-run victory in Chittagong and ensured Cook won all five matches as captain on the tour. Speaking after the match, Cook singled out Ian Bell and Tim Bresnan for special praise after they shared a 143-run first-innings partnership in Dhaka.

Fantastic

"It's been a really hard five days and credit to the way Bangladesh fought out there," he said. "A lot of credit must go to our lads. Conceding 400 in the first innings was a really good effort on that wicket and then for 'Belly' and 'Bresy' to get us back in the game was a really good effort. "I'd like to thank all our supporters as well, it's been fantastic the last five days to keep us going and it's been a really good five days for us." Cook, who also captained England to a 3-0 one-day series win over the Tigers, finished the series as top run-scorer with 342 runs from the two Tests. Speaking on his experience of captaining the side, he added: "There is a lot of things for me to work on as a leader, you only find that out being out there in the middle. "The last four weeks I've enjoyed, it's been hard for me at stages, but it's going to help me develop as a person and as a person. "They (my team-mates) have been fantastic, obviously it's been different for them having a different captain coming in with slightly different ideas to Straussy (Andrew Strauss) but they have been fantastic and I can only thank them enough." Opposite number Shakib Al Hasan, who made 96 in his side's second innings total of 285, blamed 'silly mistakes' for his side's second Test defeat.
Mistake
The home skipper, who was hoping to celebrate his 23rd birthday with a draw, lay the blame at the feet of team-mate Naeem Islam after he was dismissed following a rash shot in the morning session. "It (my birthday) could have been much better if we had drawn the match but we made some silly mistakes and that cost us the game," he said. "Naeem Islam is our recognised batsman and he made a bad mistake and that cost us the game really. "I feel very tired but it would have been great for us to have drawn against England. They are a great side with some quality batsmen and bowlers. "We are really happy with the way with have played and all credit to our team and congratulations to England."
