Tom Dumoulin set to ride in Olympic Games time-trial despite wrist fracture

Tom Dumoulin has been given the all-clear to go the Olympic Games just four days after fracturing his wrist in a crash at the Tour de France.

The Dutchman's participation in Brazil looked in serious doubt on Friday after he was injured on stage 19 of the three-week race, having previously won one of the two time-trial stages.

Dumoulin, along with Tour de France winner Chris Froome, is one of the favourites for the 59.6km individual time-trial which takes place over an undulating course.

Froome came out on top in the second of the time-trials in the Tour with Dumoulin finishing second on a course that involved much more in the way of climbing.

"I am just really happy to be able to ride the bike again so soon," Dumoulin said.

"The preparation went a little bit different than planned. However I have good medical support with now almost two weeks to go, the brace and special exercises. We'll go for it."

Dumoulin's injury did not require surgery, according to his Giant-Alpecin team, and they hope he will not need the wrist brace by the time the Rio time-trial comes around on August 10.

"Tom has a distal radius fracture, which is a clean fracture, not in the joint and without any dislocation," said team doctor Anko Boelens.

"We hope the progress continues in this way in the coming weeks to be ready in time for both (road) races and to race pain-free, without his brace."
