Lucy Garner has spoken of her delight after finishing her first Giro Rosa in Italy on Sunday.

It was a big challenge for the Team Giant-Shimano rider but after 10 gruelling days she was able to complete the race and can now look forward to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

As a sprinter, Garner, 19, was never going to be in a position to win the general classification and instead worked to help team-mate Claudia Lichtenberg, who eventually finished sixth, as well looking to contest the sprint finishes on the flatter stages.

Following the completion of the race, Garner tweeted: "Finished. Survived my first Giro. 10 days of hard racing but we're still smiling!"

The double world junior road race champion managed a top ten finish on stage five, crossing the line in ninth, while Dutch star Marianne Vos topped the GC ahead of Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and Anna van der Breggen in a 1-2-3 for the Rabo Liv team.

Next up for Garner is the Commonwealth Games where she will compete in both the road race and the individual time trial.
