Michael van Gerwen claimed his fifth PDC European Tour title this year after a 6-4 victory over Dave Chisnall in the European Darts Matchplay final.

The world No 1 edged out Chisnall with his superior finishing and added the £25,000 first prize in Austria to his previous tally of victories.

Van Gerwen, who has claimed two wins in Germany and one apiece in Gibraltar and the Netherlands, defeated Rowby-John Rodriguez in the quarter-finals before a semi-final victory over Robert Thornton in Innsbruck.

I didn't like losing in the final last week so I am delighted to win here.

Chisnall had also impressed on his route to the final, defeating Peter Wright in the quarters before a semi-final victory over David Pallett, and claimed a 4-3 lead over Van Gerwen with heavy scoring.

But 'Mighty Mike' claimed a crucial break as he raced through an 11-dart leg to move 5-4 up and ruthlessly secured the win.

"I didn't like losing in the final last week so I am delighted to win here," said Van Gerwen, who was beaten by Michael Smith in the European Darts Trophy. "The final is always different and I'm really glad I did because Dave is such a good player."

"I'm pleased with how I played all weekend overall though and to get a win and another trophy on the European Tour is great."
