Phil Taylor says he will use his new arrows against Kevin Painter

Phil Taylor has vowed to carry on playing with his brand new arrows after a convincing first round win against Keita Ono at the World Darts Championship.

The 16-time champion opted for arrows 2mm shorter and four grams lighter - 22 grams instead of his usual 26 - revealing he had less than a day's practice with them.

Taylor's friend Garry Plummer, who is managing director of Target Darts, redesigned his darts, handing the world No 3 the opportunity to use them for the first time on Friday.

And Taylor admitted he wasn't afraid to take them on to the redesigned Alexandra Palace stage.

"I tried something different," Taylor told Sky Sports. "To get through the first round was my objective and now I can go back and practice with them. I'll tell you [if they're any good] after eight or nine days.

"I only had them last night. Simon Whitlock owes me £1.3m because he bet me I didn't, but I did."

"I'll be more ready next time," he said. "Against Kevin Painter - no mistakes. I can't play bad against Kevin [because] he will punish me if I do.

"It doesn't matter about grouping [his darts] - I survived the first round. I want to improve and I want to win the World Championship.

"I'm going to try everything I can to improve."
