Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis all in action
Saturday 2 January 2016 11:19, UK
Gary Anderson, Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis are part of a thrilling New Year's Day line-up at the World Darts Championship.
Defending champion Anderson is just two wins away from a repeat appearance in the final, but must firstly come through a quarter-final against James Wade in the afternoon session, live on Sky Sports.
The Scot has been installed as the new favourite by the bookies and Sky Sports expert Wayne Mardle for the title following the exit of Michael van Gerwen, while Phil Taylor's departure means he will avoid a semi-final against 'The Power.'
Wade remains a genuine threat to his title defence, despite a recent illness, and is yet to display his best form at Alexandra Palace.
In the day's opening clash, Jelle Klaasen will be hoping to build on his 4-3 victory over Taylor when he comes up against dangerous debutant Alan 'Chuck' Norris.
Klaasen was too hot for Taylor, firing in a total of 15 maximums, averaging over 100 and ending with a 46 per cent success rate on the doubles.
But Norris hit nine 180s himself during a 4-1 demolition of Mark Webster and the pair could provide a high-scoring encounter - the winner will meet the winner of Anderson's clash with Wade.
In the evening session, Van Barneveld is back in action after his epic win over world No 1 Van Gerwen.
'Barney' defeated his fellow Dutchman in one of the best matches ever seen at the tournament, but he cannot afford to let his standards slip against Michael Smith.
The 25-year-old St Helens man ended with a 101.56 average while blitzing Benito van de Pas 4-0 and has emerged as a genuine contender.
Two-time champion Lewis will lock horns with Peter 'Snakebite' Wright in what promises to be a thriller to bring down the curtain on quarter-final day.
Lewis is yet to drop a set this year, easing to a 4-0 win over Mensur Suljovic in the last-16, while Wright served up another memorable battle with Dave Chisnall, eventually taking a tense 4-3 win.
