Michael van Gerwen wins UK Open Qualifier Two
Sunday 7 February 2016 15:58, UK
Michael van Gerwen took the second UK Open Qualifier in Wigan on Saturday, beating Alan Norris in the final.
After Adrian Lewis had taken Friday's first qualifier it was the turn of the Dutch world number one in the second of three UK Open qualifiers taking place in Wigan over the weekend.
Van Gerwen stormed into the semi-finals for the loss of just two legs, including a 6-1 last eight victory over Lewis, and while he faced a much sterner test in the last four, he proved too strong for a resurgent Simon Whitlock.
After a 6-4 victory over Whitlock, MVG took on World Championship semi-finalist Norris who had beaten Jamie Lewis in his last four encounter and it was the Dutchman who was to prove victorious with a 6-4 win to take home the £10,000 winner's cheque.
Phil Taylor, who had reached Friday's final, was beaten by Lewis, while there were also notable runs to the last eight for Berry van Peer and Kyle Anderson.
Van Gerwen will be in action again in Sunday's third UK Open qualifier and another victory would ensure he puts the disappointment of Premier League opening night defeat to James Wade behind him.
The big guns return to Premier League action on Thursday night live on Sky Sports with night two in Newcastle.
