Michael van Gerwen produces superb 164 checkout to break Phil Taylor's throw

Michael van Gerwen conjured up a fantastic 164 finish against Phil Taylor to delight his home fans in Rotterdam.

The Premier League's top two players went head-to-head on the competition's first trip to the Netherlands and they could not be separated during the tense early legs.

But Van Gerwen would break Taylor's throw in thrilling fashion, hitting two trebles before sending his dart into the bullseye to complete a 164 checkout.

With the Dutch support roaring him on, Van Gerwen firstly claimed the point he needed to finish top of the Premier League, and then hit double 16 to seal a sweet 7-5 victory over his rival. 

"It was amazing and it meant a lot to me," said an emotional van Gerwen. "The walk-on was amazing, I nearly couldn't hold my tears.

"To win in front of a crowd like is amazing for me and the crowd, they've waited so long for that and you don't want to disappoint them. It's a fantastic night in my darts career."
