Attention quickly turned to the Premier League of Darts, which culminated in a gripping final between Van Gerwen and Peter Wright which went to a last-leg decider.
The Dutchman, who saw Wright miss two darts at a double for victory, retained his title in thrilling fashion at The O2 to celebrate a third Premier League title.
Next on the agenda saw Winter Gardens in Blackpool play host to the World Matchplay in July and Phil Taylor rolled back the years to secure an emotional 16th crown in the tournament's history.
The Power, who had knocked out Van Gerwen in the quarter-finals, saw off the challenge from Wright in the final for glory.
Meanwhile, the World Grand Prix saw Daryl Gurney come of age in Dublin as the Northern Irishman claimed his maiden major title as the 31-year-old overcame Simon Whitlock in the final.
