Former champion Ted Hankey moved into the last 16 of the BDO World Championship with a 3-2 win over Clive Barden. 'The Count' threw away a 2-0 lead against debutant Barden before eventually winning a thrilling deciding set, taking out 85 to seal his place in the second round. The news was not so good for another ex-Lakeside winner, however, as John Walton was knocked out by fellow Yorkshireman Martin Atkins. The 2001 champion did manage to take the opening set but from then on his form dipped, allowing Atkins to clinch a 3-1 victory. Scott Waites, the joint favourite, saw off Andy Boulton 3-1 after a brilliant start was curtailed by Boulton's spirited fightback. Christian Kist upset sixth seed Jan Dekker with a 3-2 win, beating his fellow Dutchman in 48 minutes. Compatriot Willy van de Wiel is also through after a 3-0 result against Dave Prins. In an all-English battle, Paul Jennings got the better of Garry Thompson by a 3-1 scoreline.
