Wayne Jones, the number 32 seed, was dumped out by Dutch talent Jerry Hendriks in straight sets. The 24-year-old only mustered a 87.5 average against Jones' 92.21, however, he took his chances when they came his way.
Hendriks checkout out a brilliant 156 to secure the victory and he could now face Phil Taylor in the second round.
"I was a little bit edgy in the beginning of the game of course because it's my first time here. It's such a big audience. I was little bit nervous," he told Sky Sports. "I was a little bit lucky because Wayne didn't play his own game. I'm so happy to win the first game."
Former world champion Richie Burnett survived a massive scare against world youth champion James Hubbard before claiming a 3-2 success.
The Welshman raced into a two set advantage, claiming the first six legs against the 20-year-old. Burnett, who came under fire from the partisan crowd, missed 11 shots at a double before Hubbard won a leg, although that led to the youngster fighting back.
Hubbard won the next two sets, but Burnett's experience finally told as he won the fifth set by four legs to two, but not before he missed 46 doubles and six match-winning darts.
Burnett was more miffed at his own play afterwards and not the crowd's support for Hubbard, saying: "That's the way I've been, making things hard for myself. I'm playing alright so it's my own doing.
"I was getting more annoyed with myself than them (the crowd) because it's more natural for them to do. I respect them. I've got to just get rid of it and move on. I don't know what James was doing to be honest. He didn't seem to get into a rhythm."
Former semi-finalist Terry Jenkins made light of Steve Brown, securing a 3-0 straight-sets victory.
The final match of the session saw qualifier Daryl Gurney, who had earlier beaten Croat Robert Marijanovic in a preliminary match, upset Andy 'The Pieman' Smith 3-1.
