Scotland’s Peter Wright won his first European Tour title by beating Australian Simon Whitlock 6-2 in the final of the European Darts Open in Dusseldorf.
The world No 6 took control of the final by winning the first two legs only for Whitlock to quickly level it up at 2-2.
Finishes of 14 and 13 darts restored Wright’s two-leg advantage and a 117 checkout put him on the brink of victory which he then wrapped up with a 14-dart finish.
Wright started his Sunday campaign with a 6-2 defeat of Andy Hamilton in the quarter-finals before surviving a dramatic semi-final against Kevin Painter.
Painter led 5-4 but Wright levelled with a 121 checkout before wrapping up the win with an 11-darter in the deciding leg.
Whitlock defeated Dave Chisnall 6-3 in the last eight and edged out Gary Anderson 6-5 in the semi-finals.
