Michael van Gerwen has won the Masters title with an 11-6 victory over Raymond van Barneveld in the final.

'Mighty' Mike averaged 112.49 to defeat his more experienced Dutch compatriot in Milton Keynes on Sunday night.

A relentless burst of form midway through the match won the match from Van Gerwen when he stormed back from a 4-3 deficit to take five legs in a row including a 161 finish.

Van Gerwen, for the second time in the day, narrowly failed to illuminate the tournament with a nine-darter after missing double 12. While the spectacular finish was missed, his accuracy was slowly ending Van Barneveld's challenge. The 25-year-old soon overtook Dave Chisnall's record of 13 180s.

Despite narrowly missing out on a perfect leg Van Gerwen immediately hit double 18 to claim another PDC title.

Van Gerwen defeated Wes Newton on Saturday in the first round before Sunday wins over Dave Chisnall and Adrian Lewis set up the final.

"I'm really proud of this trophy and really happy with myself for winning this tournament," said van Gerwen.

"My averages have been brilliant and I did well today, and when I needed to I managed to lift my game - the only thing missing was a nine-darter!

"This has been an amazing tournament - it's the first time we've played in Milton Keynes and the fans were great. This tournament is growing and I'm delighted to have won it for the first time.

"I hope I can carry this on now into the Premier League, but first I want to enjoy this title."
