Speaking to Rachel Brookes about his book 'Staying on track', Nigel Mansell reveals details about his 'red mist' altercation with Ayrton Senna.

What happens when two F1 greats crash into each other in the heat of battle?

Well, former world champion Nigel Mansell recalls the story of the 1987 Belgian GP when he and Ayrton Senna famously clashed on the track - and then off it!

Spa Francorchamps played host to the third round of that year's championship and Mansell, the early title leader, had qualified on pole ahead of Williams team-mate Nelson Piquet and rising Lotus star Senna by a massive 1.4 seconds.

Mansell held the lead at the original start of the race, but a restart meant the Briton had to go through it all again. Second time round he lost out to Senna, who darted between the Williams cars off the line to lead into the first corner.

However, Mansell, one of F1's most gutsy and aggressive racers, wasn't done yet. Getting a run on the yellow Lotus coming out of Blanchimont, he attempted to go round the outside of the Fagnes right-hander, but Senna wasn't about to back out and the two cars touched, sending them spiralling into the gravel with the Brazilian out on the spot.

While Mansell briefly continued in his damaged Williams-Honda, he was soon out of the running for good too - and making a beeline for Senna in the Lotus garage!
