How Sunday qualifying works at the Indianapolis 500

The real fight for pole at the Indianapolis 500 starts on Sunday in the second of two qualifying sessions.

Saturday's session decided those that made the "Fast 9 Shootout" and they will fight it out for pole and the front three rows of the grid. The cars line-up three wide at the Indy 500.

The drivers each get a single attempt at a four-lap run, with their average speed over the laps determining their starting spot.

The running order is determined by their Saturday qualifying result, slowest to fastest.

Therefore, the running order will be Marco Andretti, Tony Kanaan, Fernando Alonso, Will Power, Alexander Rossi, J.R. Hildebrand, Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato and finally Ed Carpenter.

Prior to the "Fast 9 Shootout", the remaining drivers will battle of slots 10-33 on the grid, with James Davison replacing Sebastien Bourdais' after his accident.

Again, each driver will get a single attempt to set a four lap run, running in order of slowest to fastest from Saturday's results.

Even if the driver in 10th sets an average speed higher than those in the "Fast 9 Shootout", they cannot start higher than 10th.
