Romain Grosjean crashed heavily after a broken drain cover punctured his Haas car

Romain Grosjean crashed heavily at the Malaysia GP on Friday in a high-speed accident caused by a loose drain cover.

The Haas driver's right-rear tyre was immediately punctured when he drove over the errant cover on kerbing at Turn 13, which had just lifted up moments before as cars ahead of him took their normal racing lines.

With his tyre shredded, Grosjean's car careered backwards off the circuit and into the barriers, with the impact doing significant damage to its left-hand side.

The Frenchman was unharmed in the incident and soon returned to the paddock.

"I didn't see anything and then suddenly I had a big hit on the right rear," said Grosjean. "I'm good and fine, that's the main thing."

The accident resulted in Practice One being abandoned a quarter of an hour early, with FIA race director Charlie Whiting and local officials dispatched to assess the problematic drain.

Haas chief Guenther Steiner said the incident was unacceptable.

"Things like this in 2017 shouldn't happen on a permanent circuit," he said. "They shouldn't happen on any circuit.

"This is not acceptable and not up to the standards.

"The next thing we need to make sure is how this doesn't happen in the race because this would have been a little bit of a bigger disaster, if a few cars go over it and the cover comes up."

With repairs carried out on Friday night, the Malaysia GP action resumes with Practice Three from 7am on Saturday morning, live on Sky Sports F1.
