Brendon Hartley confident of Toro Rosso stay despite split rumours

"I know I have the ability to be here and doing a good job in Formula 1," says Hartley; But are Toro Rosso looking for replacement?

Brendon Hartley has declined to discuss rumours about his Formula 1 future after reports that Toro Rosso attempted to sign Lando Norris to replace him.

The New Zealander says he is confident about the terms of his Toro Rosso contract and insisted "I know I have the ability to be here" when faced with the inevitable questions during his media duties ahead of this weekend's Canadian GP.

"It's the second grand prix in a row I've been responding the rumours, but it's not really interesting for me to comment," said Hartley.

"I know what my contract says, I'm very confident in the work I've been doing for Toro Rosso behind the scenes to develop the car. Things didn't really go my way in Monaco in qualifying, but I felt very strong all weekend and I'm going to take the same approach this weekend.

"I know I have the ability to be here and doing a good job in Formula 1."

Asked if he had discussed the matter with Toro Rosso's management, Hartley said: "I haven't spoken to Franz [Tost, Toro Rosso team principal] yet and, to be honest with you, I'm focused on this weekend.

"It doesn't even make sense to have the conversation. I have a contract to be here and I'm looking forward to the next races, especially with the updates we have planned."

Hartley has scored one point in his 10 grand prix appearances since Red Bull unexpectedly brought him back into their stable to race for Toro Rosso last October, seven years after dropping the now 28-year-old from their young driver programme.
