Ferrari call on experience of seven-times world champion
Michael Schumacher is set to test Ferrari's title-winning F2007 car at Barcelona next week as he helps the team adapt to next year's traction control ban.
The seven-times World Champion has been called up by the Scuderia, who are keen to tap into his knowledge of driving Formula One cars without the use of electronic driver aids such as traction control.
However, the German's representatives have been quick to stress that the test will not preclude a return to racing.
"Michael has a big experience in driving cars with no traction control and no electronic aids, so it makes sense for him to give his input," a spokeswoman said.
"It's half for pleasure, half for technical reasons," added a spokesman, who also said that Schumacher would test on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
Invitation
Despite Schumacher's insistence in May that he was happy with life outside the cockpit, Ferrari team boss Jean Todt has always maintained an open invitation for the 38-year-old.
"Todt said that if Michael had the desire to drive the car, he would be happy to fulfill it," the spokesman added.
Schumacher, who retired at the end of the 2006 season, also attended several grands prix last season in an advisory capacity for Ferrari.
He has not tested since calling it a day after last year's Brazilian Grand Prix, but did run the Ferrari's F2007 at the team's private Fiorano track last month in front of board members from parent company Fiat.
Schumacher also demonstrated an older car at the same circuit in June as part of Ferrari's 60th birthday celebrations.
