BMW Sauber driver takes prestigious Lorenzo Bandini trophy

Robert Kubica's impressive performances for BMW Sauber have landed him this year's Lorenzo Bandini Trophy. Kubica, who made his Formula One debut in 2006, follows in the footsteps World Champions Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve as well as Felipe Massa and Mark Webber as recipients of the prestigous award. The Pole finished sixth in the championship standings last season and has carried his fine form over to 2008, scoring two podium finishes. The Lorenzo Bandini trophy is handed out by the village of Brisighella, near Imola, in memory of Lorenzo Bandini, who died in a fiery crash at the wheel of a Ferrari in the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. Kubica's likeability, modesty, his love for Italy, and his ability in speaking Italian were given as reasons why he was honoured. The BMW driver will receive the award - currently in its 15th edition - in Brisighella on May 18, one week before the Monaco GP.
