Sebastian Vettel admits Red Bull 'haven’t closed the gap' to Mercedes since Australia

But German says FRIC ban could affect some more than others

Sebastian Vettel admits Red Bull “haven’t really closed the gap” to Mercedes since the opening race of the season in Australia.

It appears almost certain that for the first time since 2009 someone other than Vettel and the Milton Keynes-based team will take home F1’s two world titles with Mercedes enjoying a 158-point advantage in the Constructors’ Championship and both Silver Arrows drivers over 60 points clear of nearest challenger, Daniel Ricciardo.

“Right now the gap is very big and we haven’t really closed the gap since race one,” Vettel told Sky Sports News.

“Obviously we have tried lots of stuff to improve, but they are doing the same thing. We are waiting for bigger steps to happen to close the gap even more which I think at the end of the season we can judge a lot better, then we know what we can do over the winter.”

Thus it appears Vettel is already looking to 2015, but could a ban on FRIC suspension see Red Bull close the gap sooner?

“Obviously we know what we are running, we don’t know what they are running, but it is pretty clear what the FIA have said so some teams will probably be more affected, others less,” Vettel added.

Next up for Vettel is his home race at Hockenheim in a week's time.
