Ex-Ferrari employee handed 20-month suspended sentence
Ferrari's former head mechanic Nigel Stepney was on Wednesday handed a 20-month suspended prison sentence for his role in the Formula One 'spygate' scandal.
Stepney was convicted of sabotaging Kimi Raikkonen's car in the build up to the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix and of also passing on technical secrets to rivals McLaren.
The Englishman, who was not present at the Modena court, did not plead guilty but had entered a plea bargain accepting his punishment.
McLaren were fined a record $100million and stripped of all their constructors' championship points for the 2007 season after being found guilty of fraudulent conduct by the FIA.
Their crime was being found in possession of a confidential 780-page document belonging to Ferrari.
Stepney's role in the affair involved allegedly handing over the information to McLaren's former chief designer Mike Coughlan.
