Wehrlein and Button came together at Portier and as the McLaren tried to get down the inside, the two cars collided flipping the Sauber into the barriers.

Jenson Button and Pascal Wehrlein were involved in a nasty-looking crash at the Monaco GP that left the Sauber on its side in the Portier barriers.

Button, on his one-off return to the Formula 1 grid for McLaren, attempted a move up the inside of Wehrlein as he looked to move up to 18th.

The gap closed quickly, however, and the contact meant Wehrlein's C36 was awkwardly flung into the wall, with the damage also ending Button's afternoon.

A Safety Car was unsurprisingly deployed, such was the position of the Sauber, with drivers asking about the well-being of Wehrlein. Thankfully, he reported over team radio: "Yeah [I'm OK]. I would be better if I could jump out the car!"

After finally exiting the car the German, who missed the first two races of the season thanks to a back injury sustained at the Race of Champions, reported to the medical centre for further checks.

"I touched my head on the barrier so I will have to do another scan next week for my back, so let's see," said Wehrlein. "I remember everything, it was just scary that the brakes started to smoke and I couldn't get out of the car.

"I could jump out myself so it seems to be OK, but with the injury I had - I'm not too sure."

Fernando Alonso wishes good luck to Jenson Button over in an amusing exchange over Team Radio ahead of the Monaco GP.

Wehrlein also claimed Button's attempt for an overtake was a "silly move".

"It's so difficult to see out the back of these cars - I've been telling the team and the FIA that all weekend," added Button. "I tried to back out of it, but was too late. I've never seen a car go up on its side before.

"It was horrible to see. I've seen him and he doesn't seem very happy, but he's OK."

Button has been handed a three-place grid penalty for his next F1 race this season for causing the collision, although it is unlikely that it will be served given the 2009 world champion has insisted Monaco was his last race.
