Bowerman sinks Grecians

Image: Nicholls: Netted for Walsall

Substitute George Bowerman was the hero as his goal in extra-time secured Walsall a 3-2 FA Cup first-round replay victory over Exeter.

Eight minutes into extra-time the 20-year-old burst on to a through ball, rounded goalkeeper Artur Krysiak and slotted home for his second senior goal in four days. The Saddlers were first to threaten when Alex Nicholls cut inside and hammered a 25-yard drive against the crossbar. The visitors were making little headway, but might have had a penalty in the 39th minute when Richard Logan appeared to be pulled back by Ollie Lancashire. But Logan a deserved goal three minutes before half-time, cleverly hooking the ball into the roof of the net when Danny Coles headed on a Liam Sercombe free-kick. Walsall equalised 20 minutes into the second half when Jon Macken hooked in a header from Ollie Lancashire, and Nicholls put the Saddlers in front when he hammered home Bowerman's pass. However, Grecians sub Elliott Frear forced extra-time as his shot deflected past James Walker before Bowerman had the final say for the Saddlers, who will visit Dagenham in the second round.
