York's qualification for the League Two play-offs has seen them exceed all expectations, according to manager Nigel Worthington.

The Minstermen, assured of at least a seventh-placed finish, will look to extend their unbeaten league run to 17 matches in their last game at promoted Scunthorpe on Saturday in a bid to seal fifth spot. The club have lost only two league games this year and are unbeaten since the start of February - an impressive sequence having staved off an immediate exit from the Football League last season with victory in their final three matches. "My remit when we started the season was to make sure we stayed in League Two," Worthington said. "We wanted to establish ourselves in the division this season and gradually build, but we are where we are and this tremendous run has taken us to where we would like to be ahead of schedule. "But that's the situation, in this game there's no perfect time to start being successful, it's here and it's something we should embrace." Former Northern Ireland boss Worthington, who replaced Gary Mills at Bootham Crescent in March last year, made five key signings during the January transfer window, with midfielder Russell Penn, on-loan Charlton goalkeeper Nick Pope, defenders Keith Lowe and John McCombe, plus on-loan Preston winger Will Hayhurst all playing a key role in the club's transformation. "We have a group of players here now who are good enough to go up and if that did happen it would be a case of trying to adjust to a better standard by adding some more players to the squad who have League One experience," Worthington added. "There will be a whole load of decisons we need to make, but we can only make them if and when we get promoted. "But before any of that we have got to battle and that is the right word. It's going to be a battle from where we are now until the end of the season. "Whenever that is, once it's crystal clear where we will be, we can then sit down and assess the situation."
