Lewis Hamilton believes the resolve shown by Mercedes through the Testgate affair is set to have a positive knock-on effect on their season - although he still suspects they will struggle to beat Red Bull and Ferrari in Sunday's British GP.

Nonetheless, Hamilton does believe that, given time, Mercedes are capable of closing down the performance gap to Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel. "Sebastian's doing an incredible job. He's performing as the World Champion he is and they're going to be difficult to catch. But I don't think it's impossible to close the gap," he argued. "We've already closed quite a huge deficit already so we're happy where we are, but of course we want to do better. "Fernando [Alonso]'s a lot closer and I think once they sort out their qualifying they'll be able to match the Red Bulls, if not beat them. We need to do a lot more work."
