GAA: Michael Murphy and Stephen Maher named players of the month for May

Michael Murphy and Stephen Maher have been named the GAA/GPA All-Stars sponsored by Opel players of the month for May in football and hurling respectively.

Donegal captain Murphy produced a man-of-the-match performance in their Ulster quarter-final win at neighbours Derry.

The Glenswilly clubman kicked four points, one of which was a superb effort from a sideline ball, and it was his influence in the third quarter of the match that inspired the Tir Chonaill County to a 1-11 to 0-11 victory.

Michael Murphy has long been a leader for Donegal despite his relative youth and his latest offering against Derry was in keeping with his leadership qualities. I’m particularly pleased for Stephen Maher whose display against Galway was excellent.

Maher and his Laois teammates came agonisingly close to pulling off a huge upset in their Leinster quarter-final against Galway.

Despite losing by two points following a late fightback by the Tribesmen, Maher scored 0-3 and was instrumental in driving his county’s spirited performance.

“I’m particularly pleased for Stephen Maher whose display against Galway was excellent. Laois’ continue to progress and he has a role to play in that process.

“For the second year running Laois hurlers have issued a serious statement in the Leinster SHC, which is a testimony to the work being carried out in the county. Stephen was a pivotal figure during Laois' preliminary round successes and follows in Cahir Healy's footsteps by being honoured with the Opel monthly award.
