David Howell millimetres away from an ace at the BMW Masters

There have already been a record-breaking 45 holes-in-one on the European Tour this season, but David Howell could not have got any closer to adding to that tally during the opening round of the BMW Masters.
Howell had seen a run of four consecutive birdies come to an end with a par at the 16th, but almost produced the perfect reply when he made his way to a par-three next.
With a brand new BMW up for grabs for anyone that sinks their tee shot on the 17th this week, Howell's attempt looked destined to find the cup when the ball pitched a few feet short and trickled towards the hole.
However, Howell was left stunned as his effort stopped alongside the flag and agonisingly short of a first ace of the week.

Although a tap-in birdie briefly moved Howell top of the leaderboard, the world No 97 closed a three-under 69 to lie five shots off the pace.
