Jim Furyk fired a superb nine-under 63 to move into a one-shot lead after the third round at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
On another glorious day on the west coast, tailor-made for low scoring, the Ryder Cup veteran took full advantage as he posted nine birdies, including seven from the last ten holes. in a blemish-free round at Pebble Beach.
Despite making his first Tour appearance since September, Furyk's short game was showing no sign of rust, making an 8-foot birdie on the ninth before his remarkable birdie blitz on the back nine.
Furyk was trailing Australia's Matt Jones for much of his round but passed him at the par-five 18th, with a wedge he spun back to tap-in range for a birdie.
Jones recovered from a slow start to make six birdies in a seven-hole stretch and build a three-shot lead late in the afternoon, before bogeying his last two holes in a six-under 67.
Overnight leader Brandt Snedeker joins Jones one-shot back after posting a third round 67, with a bogey from the bunker at the par-four third his only dropped shot.
Starting on the back nine, the American rolled in a 30-foot par putt at the 12th hole and another 30-footer for birdie from just off the 15th green, but missed several birdie chances on the easier front nine before making one from his final hole.
"Didn't have my best stuff starting out today," Snedeker said. "I was able to gut out a good round.
"You kind of have to do that. You're going to have a stretch of golf where you're not playing your best, and hopefully, mine is behind me now."
Nick Watney posted a seven-under 65 at Pebble to stay in contention two shots behind, with Kevin Chappell a further two shots behind after his six-under.
Germany's Marcel Siem matched Furyk's 63 with seven birdies and an eagle on the par-five to lie six adrift, joining seven players tied-tenth incuding Ireland's Shane Lowry and world No 4 Jason Day.
Veteran John Daly, one-shot off the lead after his opening round, shot 73 at Spyglass Hill and missed the cut for the 11th straight time at this tournament dating to his rookie season in 1991.
