Mehaffey dominated the girls' event at the prestigious Quinta do Lago resort on the Algarve, the world amateur No 16 from Northern Ireland winning by a remarkable 16 shots.

The 17-year-old co-led after the first round with Eloise Healey, but Mehaffey pulled away from the field over the next two days to claim a convincing victory on six under par.

"Whatever lead you have, it feels like everyone is breathing down your neck," she said. "I was shaky after three bogeys but managed to relax and enjoy the back nine. I looked at the honours board the other day and to win alongside the other girls is such an honour. It's my last ever junior competition and I put my year down to the hard work over the winter."

Li's win in his third and final appearance in the boys' tournament was less straightforward but equally impressive as he endured a thrilling final-round battle with John Gough before snatching a one-stroke triumph.

Li led by two after the second day, but he incurred a two-shot penalty on the second hole of the final round when he grounded his club while taking a practice stroke in a water hazard.

Gough took advantage and roared into a four-shot lead before Li staged a superb fightback on the inward half, making four birdies to edge ahead of his rival and win on five under.

Former Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship competitor Tommy Fleetwood, says the tournament is a fantastic experience.

"It was the best I've ever putted on that back nine and this win feels great," said Li. "It was hard going after my two-shot penalty but after the worst moment it switched around pretty quickly to become the best moment of my career and the back nine was just so enjoyable for me. I've finished my junior career on a real high and I'm extremely happy."

Wentworth member Daniel List finished third at level par, but he provided one of the shots of the tournament when he holed his second shot over water at the 12th on the second day to card an unlikely eagle.

This was the third consecutive time the event was held at Quinta do Lago since recent British Masters champion Matt Fitzpatrick claimed the title at Close House in 2012.

The most notable former champion is Justin Rose, winner in 1997, and he graciously found time to send a good luck message to this year's finalists.
