Louis Oosthuizen stormed into contention in the Perth International by carding an eight-under 64 in the second round at Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
The South African, who is playing in Australia for the first time this week, sunk eight birdies on a flawless card as he moved to 10-under at the halfway stage, one off the lead.
The 2010 Open champion should have been sharing the lead with Peter Uihlein and Brett Rumford but missed a short birdie putt on the final hole.
"I just over-read it," Oosthuizen said. "It was the first real putt I had in the shadows today. I took my glasses off, and I misread it a little bit. It's not going to bother me though."
Overnight leader Uihlein stayed at the top of the leaderboard, the American firing a four-under 68 to go with Thursday's 65, with Australian Rumford joining him thanks to a seven-under 65, his only blemish a bogey at the par-three 12th.
Rumford, 38, had stomach surgery last year which kept him off the tour for four months, but coped well with the scorching temperatures.
"This is the hottest conditions no doubt I've played in," Rumford said. "But the body's great. There's no signs whatsoever. That's all history now.
"My concentration waned a little bit coming home but I made some nice up-and-downs and made some nice putts from long range as well, so all in all I was really happy."
Australian Rhein Gibson is in fourth place on nine under after a 68, with his compatriot Jason Scrivener (67) one shot further back in fifth place.
Alexander Levy of France is the leading European player in the field, sitting sixth on seven under.
Frenchman Victor Dubuisson missed his second consecutive cut since making a recent switch in equipment, a one-under 71 leaving him four over for the tournament.
The cut came at one over with England's Oliver Wilson, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Dunne of Ireland among those to miss out by one shot.
Defending champion Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark never got anything going and finished with a six-over 78 to miss the cut by five shots.
