Rory McIlroy hit an outrageous putt on the 17th hole for a superb birdie

Rory McIlroy’s hopes of defending his Wells Fargo Championship title were kept alive with a monster birdie late in his third round at Quail Hollow.

The world No 3 had little to cheer about during a disappointing moving Saturday, but brought a huge roar from those around the 17th green with a remarkable birdie putt.

Heading to the penultimate hole two-over for the day and nine shots off the pace, McIlroy's tee shot found the dancefloor but landed some 80 feet from the pin.

McIlroy then guided his long-range putt a long way left of the flag but watched it break and catch the slope, seeing his ball roll in off the right-edge of the cup.

That birdie-two helped McIlroy close a one-over 73 and get back in to red figures for the week, although still leaves him a long way from the top of the leaderboard.
