Tiger Woods confirms entry for next week's Safeway Open on PGA Tour

Tiger Woods has already texted Davis Love as list of possible captain's picks for the Ryder Cup

Tiger Woods has confirmed his entry for next week's Safeway Open in California.

The 40-year-old had always intended to make his comeback from injury at Silverado in Napa, having not played a competitive round since August of last year.

Woods has been sidelined by serious back problems for a number of years, having undergone three operations during a 19-month spell.

The former world No 1 is also hoping to cross the Atlantic in November to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open, which forms part of the European Tour's Final Series, after which he will tee-up at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in December.

Only last week, the 14-time major winner served as a vice-captain to Davis Love, as the United States regained the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota.

He will perform the same role for Steve Stricker at the 2017 Presidents Cup, if he fails to make the team as a player.

On his last appearance on the PGA Tour, at the Wyndham Championship, Woods tied-for-10th.

His most recent victory came in Ohio 38 months ago, while his latest major championship success was the US Open of 2008. Not surprisingly, he is currently a lowly 767 in the World Ranking.

However, before striking his first competitive shot next Thursday, he will test his back at the Tiger Woods Invitational event at the Monterey Peninsula on October 10 - before travelling 150 miles up the West Coast to Napa for the Safeway Open.

Next week's tournament opens proceedings on the official PGA Tour season for 2016-17.
