Sergio Garcia's tee shot seemed to have a mind of its own during the first round of the CIMB Classic.

Sergio Garcia made an impressive start to the CIMB Classic, but had to recover from a moment of misfortune late in his round in Malaysia.

Making his first appearance since featuring in Europe's Ryder Cup defeat at Hazeltine, Garcia birdied his opening hole and gained two more shots on his way to completing the back nine in 33.

An eagle-three at the third closed the gap on the early leaders, before the Spaniard was the victim of an unlucky break at the par-four seventh.

Garcia's tee-shot missed the right side of the fairway but looked like it would leave a good angle to the green, only for his ball to bounce on to a sloped path.

The ball increased in pace as it ricocheted down the hill and nearly flicked up into the hazard on its way back in the direction of the tee box.

Once it eventually stopped, Garcia was able to take a free drop which helped him save par on his way to signing for a bogey-free round.
