The golfing world has paid tribute to major-winning caddie Dave Musgrove, who passed away on Monday aged 74.

Musgrove worked with the like Seve Ballesteros, Sandy Lyle and Lee Janzen during a career spanning more than half a century, with all three claiming majors with him on the bag.

The Englishman first caddied aged 12th and experienced his first major assisting David Talbot at The Open in 1962, before helping a young Ballesteros to his first Claret Jug at Royal Lytham in 1979.

He then spent nine years on Lyle's bag as the Scot claimed two major titles, before assisting Lee Janzen to US Open victory in 1998.

Paying tribute to his close friend, Lyle wrote on Twitter: "Muzzy RIP. We wrote history together at The Open, The Masters and The Players Championship. We'll miss your humour and your stories #gentleman."

Musgrove caddied for a number of other players in his lengthy career, but renewed his partnership with Lyle in 2001 for a 40th consecutive Open appearance as a caddie.

South Africa's Ernie Els added on Twitter: "Sad to hear news of Dave Musgrove's passing. We enjoyed our time together; he taught me a lot as a rookie. One of the legends!"
