The final women’s major of the year has been reduced to a 54-hole event after bad weather saw play cancelled at the Evian Championship.

Heavy rain and strong winds saw the action suspended just after 10am local time at the Evian Resort Golf Club, with play eventually abandoned for the day at 2.30pm.

More than half of the field were unable to begin their tournament and all Thursday's scores have been scrapped, with the opening round now resuming on Friday morning.

Winds reached gusts of 45mph during a weather-disrupted Thursday, with LPGA Tour Commissioner Michael Whan confident that the re-start offered the "cleanest, fairest, most competitive" option.

"Nobody even played half a round," Whan said. "We know that if we said 72 holes and we start again tomorrow (Friday), we're probably looking at Monday and Tuesday, and that's not great for anyone.
