Ernie Els produces a stunning finish to his opening round at St Andrews as he drains a huge putt for a closing eagle.

Ernie Els found the perfect way to lift his spirits after a tough day at the office as he drained a huge putt for eagle at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Els arrived on the 18th tee at St Andrews struggling on four over par after a torrid opening round, which included double-bogeys at the first and ninth holes as well as two other dropped shots, although birdies at 12 and 14 at least kept him off the bottom of the leaderboard.

But the South African veteran, playing alongside the red-hot British Masters champion Paul Dunne, hammered a big drive down the famous 18th and managed to get his ball to the front-right fringe of the green, some 70 feet from the hole.

A two-putt for birdie would have been a great result from there, but the four-time major champion went one better as he sent his putt on a great line to the right of the target, his ball taking the significant right-to-left break before straightening and hitting the centre of the cup for a superb eagle-two.
