Shae Wools-Cobb threatened a ’59 round’ on his way to opening up a four-shot lead after the first round of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.

The Australian carded an eight-under 63 under preferred lies at Royal Wellington Golf Club, where the winner will secure an invite to both the Masters and Open Championship in 2018.

Min Woo Lee, Nick Voke, Sean Maruyama and Lloyd Jefferson Go all sit tied-second spot after posting matching 67s, with five players sharing sixth spot on two under.

Beginning on the back nine, Wools-Cobb birdied his opening three holes before following another gain at the 16th with a 20-foot eagle at the par-five 18th to reach the turn in 29.

Wools-Cobb added gains at the first and third and carded a two-putt birdie at the fourth to increase his chances of a sub-60 round, only to bogey the next and post a run of pars along the closing stretch.
