Defending champion Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson both shot 70, while other high‑ranked contenders such as Charley Hull and Minjee Lee returned 72s.
England's Lottie Woad and world No 1 Jeeno Thitikul face an uphill task after opening with one‑over 73s, leaving them tied for 36th and seven shots off the lead.
Fresh off a victory in her native Thailand, Thitikul joined a field stacked with elite players, with nine of the world's top 10 in action; world No 2 Nelly Korda is the only absentee.
Reflecting on her improvement since opening with a 78 at last year's event, Kim said: "When I think about my game and myself as a golfer since last year… it obviously feels great to score well.
"But I feel like I can handle things a lot better, and I've been talking with my mental coach as well. There are a lot of things I've changed and a lot of things I feel I'm doing better.
"Today was a testament to what we've been working on, and I'm working hard on what I can control."
The tournament is the second of three stops on the LPGA's early‑season Asian swing, with the final event taking place next week on Hainan Island, China.
