Westy misses out on invite

England's Lee Westwood has missed out on an invitation to the PGA Tour event scheduled for the week before the United States Open.

England's Lee Westwood has missed out on an invitation to the PGA Tour event in Memphis scheduled the week before the US Open.

The world number four, who returns to action this week at the Quail Hollow Championship in North Carolina, had hoped to warm up for the season's second major at Pebble Beach by competing at the St Jude Classic.

But the Masters runner-up revealed on Tuesday that he had not been able to get a place at the event - despite his world ranking of number four.

Westwood, last season's leading money-winner in Europe who has finished third, third and second in the last three majors, requires invites for regular PGA Tour events as he is not a member of that circuit.

"I don't like to spend more than three weeks away from home, which if I played 15 here would mean I'd have to do that more," said Westwood.

"I'm at the point in my career now and the age where I'm at a standard where I can play pretty much where I want when I want. That's how it is this year - apart from one event."

Westwood joins Masters champion Phil Mickelson and world number one Tiger Woods in the field this week, with both Americans making their first playing appearances since Augusta.
