Englishman shoots up rankings following Wentworth heroics
Simon Khan has jumped a huge 365 places in the world rankings after his remarkable triumph at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday. The 37-year-old was only playing at the European Tour's flagship event after receiving a sponsor's invitation on Monday. However, the 2006 runner-up took full advantage with a fabulous closing round of 66 proving good enough to secure him a dramatic one-shot victory. Khan found himself down at 471 in the world prior to the event having lost his European Tour card at the end of last season and struggled for form at the start of this after coming through qualifying school. However, his problems now appear at an end after just the second Tour win of his professional career. As well as moving up to 106 in the world list, he has a five-year Tour exemption and a place in the next three Open Championships. Australian Jason Day, winner of the PGA Tour's HP Byron Nelson Classic over the weekend, has climbed up to 79th in the world on the back of his success. However, like Khan, he will still have to try and qualify for next month's US Open having failed to crack the top 50 in the world. Khan has decided to compete in Monday's 36-hole US Open qualifier at Walton Heath where Colin Montgomerie is amongst the field trying to secure a place at Pebble Beach.
